2022 was a successful year for the Southport Sharks. All three teams made the Grand Final and the QAFLW Reserves won the premiership in their first year in the competition.

VFL

2022 saw the Southport Sharks compete in the VFL competition. Twenty-one teams took part, comprised of 11 AFL clubs, three AFL-aligned clubs and seven stand-alone clubs. Following the cancellation of the 2021 season after 10 games, finals were played this season, and Southport featured prominently. 2022 will also be remembered as the season we lost our President of 49 years, Dr Alan MacKenzie. The longest serving President in Australian football history has left a lasting legacy and is greatly missed for his passion for the game in Queensland, his care for thousands of Southport players during his tenure and his leadership of our remarkable club.

Steve Daniel once again coached the VFL side and was assisted by Matthew Primus, Matthew Lappin and Luke Kenelley. A list of 40 players was compiled, made up of 28 players aged 22 and over and 12 players under the age of 22. Six players under 22 had to be played in the team each week.

Following a pre-season disrupted by inclement weather, which forced us off Fankhauser Reserve on many occasions and Covid-19, which caused us to cancel an entire week of training, we travelled to Punt Road to take on Richmond in Round One. The ghosts of the preseason came back to haunt us immediately, and we were defeated by 31 points after fading out of the contest from quarter time.

The response to the loss was immediate, and our first home game saw a comfortable 57-point win over Williamstown. Wins over Werribee and Geelong followed before a miracle escape against Footscray. In a game delayed due to flight issues, a late goal by Tom Fields put us in front at the 30-minute mark after trailing all night.

Following a bye, we travelled to Casey Fields and were embarrassed by a red-hot Casey outfit that kicked the first seven goals of the match. We courageously rallied to lose by 30 points but
this Casey team was as good as we had played in our two years in the VFL.

Consecutive wins followed against GWS, Port Melbourne, Brisbane, Sandringham, Northern Bullants, Frankston, Box Hill and Sydney. We were now entrenched in the top two on the ladder. A home game against Essendon ended the winning streak after we coughed up a 31-point quarter time lead to lose by two points.

Consecutive losses to Collingwood at Victoria Park and Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium had the club leaders wondering how to end the form slump, but a resounding 106-point win at home in Round 22 rectified the situation. An upset Brisbane win over Casey saw us finish third after the home and away season.

We travelled to Burpengary to take on the Brisbane Lions in the Qualifying Final. After a fast start, we extended the lead at every break and ran out comfortable 49-point winners. This earned us a week off and a home Preliminary Final.

A local derby against the Gold Suns was presented to us at Fankhauser Reserve. On a perfect day in front of a crowd of 4000, the Suns had 20 AFL listed players, and this ensured a thrilling Preliminary Final contest.

Trailing by a goal at three-quarter time, we kicked five goals ten minutes into the final term to overwhelm the Suns and qualify for our first ever VFL Grand Final. This game also heralded a new trophy, the “Mackenzie Cup”, which will be contested each time the Southport VFL team plays against the Suns. While President of Southport for 49 years, Doc Mackenzie was also a Board Member of the Gold Coast Suns and was awarded life membership in 2018. This trophy will keep the memory of Doc well and truly at the forefront of both clubs.

On the 18th of September, the Grand Final was held at Ikon Park, Carlton, where we took on the Casey Demons, who had finished the season on top. A cold and windy Melbourne day awaited, and we were supported by a loyal band of supporters, many of whom travelled from Queensland for the game.

An inaccurate first quarter saw us lead by seven points at quarter time, but Casey took control from then on. A severe storm hit the ground
after half time, and Casey handled the conditions better. Scoring was tough, and we couldn’t penetrate the Casey defence, eventually succumbing by 32 points.

While the Grand Final was a disappointing day, the season should be viewed as a resounding success. Finishing second in a 21-team competition is an outstanding result, and we were the only stand-alone VFL club to qualify for finals.

QAFLW

Seniors

Season 2022 saw the Southport Sharks women’s team elevated from QFAW Division One to the State League competition, QAFLW. After back-to-back Premierships in 2020 and 2021, the club was ready to step up to the top competition in Queensland. Dual Premiership Coach Ryan Davis once again took the reins and the list was constructed between October and March. For the first time, the club would also field a reserve grade team, so 60 women were required to play over the course of the season.

The competition consisted of eight teams from South-East Queensland; Southport, Bond University, University of Queensland, Yeronga, Coorparoo, Wilston Grange, Aspley and Maroochydore.

The Sharks’ season started with six consecutive wins which saw us sitting atop the QAFLW ladder. The first loss for the season came against reigning premiers University of Queensland who completely outclassed the competition rookies. This loss also coincided with the AFLW Draft which saw a huge change in the list. Former Southport junior Annise Bradfield and NT recruit Ashanti Bush were put on ice by the Gold Coast Suns in preparation for AFLW pre-season duties.

Following some outstanding performances for Southport in the first half of the season, former Southport junior Giselle Davies was re-contracted by the Gold Coast Suns and recruit Britt Perry was contracted by expansion AFLW team Port Adelaide.

At the NAB AFLW Draft on 29th of June, Southport Premiership Player Fleur Davies was drafted by the GWS Giants at pick 64, and North Queensland recruit Alana Gee was selected by the Gold Coast Suns at pick 19.

The second half of the season saw mixed results from the Sharks. The loss of the AFLW players forced many changes to the senior side as Coach Davis searched for the best combination. Consecutive losses to Bond University and University of Queensland saw the Sharks fighting for a finals spot in the last round of the season. Pride Round was played at Yeronga and Coorparoo stood between Southport and a maiden finals appearance. The Sharks won a low scoring affair by 14 points, to finish third at the end of the home and away season.

The first Semi-Final saw a comfortable win over Maroochydore and the Preliminary Final resulted in a big win over arch-rivals Bond Uni at their home ground. Eight incident referrals from the game resulted in four reports to Bond Uni players who all pleaded guilty and were suspended for six weeks. All Southport players were cleared, but Tatum Shaw suffered a broken wrist and would miss the Grand Final.

The Grand Final was played at Yeronga on 7th of August and Southport faced defending the Premiers University of Queensland. Inaccurate kicking cost the Sharks early in the game and we trailed by two points at half time. Brianna McFarlane kicked two goals in the third term to gain the ascendancy and the Sharks led by six points at three quarter time. UQ kicked the only major for the term and the game was headed for extra time. Three minutes plus time on each way was played and UQ were able to kick 1.1 which handed the Sharks an agonizing Grand Final defeat.

Despite the disappointment of losing their inaugural state league Grand Final, the season will be judged as a resounding success. The Reserves won the Premiership, the Seniors finished runners-up and five players were drafted or re-contracted to AFLW clubs following the postseason signing of North Queensland recruit Kaylee Kimber to the Gold Coast Suns.

Reserves

Former Southport junior coach Malcolm Smith took the reins of the inaugural Southport QAFLW Reserves Team. After some early season losses, the Reserves managed to string together
many hard fought wins and were good enough to finish the home and away season in second place.

Despite playing many games with less than the full 21 players, the talent was there and fighting quality of this team had to be seen to be believed.

The Semi Final against Bond University at Yeronga resulted in a comfortable 22 point win which saw our Reserves progress straight through to the Grand Final. The Grand Final was played at Yeronga on 7th of August. Local rivals Bond University were again the opponent and it was a remarkable game.

A high pressure, extremely low scoring affair played in perfect conditions saw the Sharks lose the lead in the final term, before Tayla Gregory goaled off the ground to regain the lead. The frantic final minutes saw the Sharks defend valiantly and hang on for a courageous two-point Grand Final win.

Meg McGuiness played a brilliant last quarter to help save the game and 2020 Sharks Premiership Player Alessia Smythe was awarded the Best on Ground medal for
her performance at centre half back.

Congratulations to Malcolm Smith and his team in creating another first for the club in achieving a Premiership with our first ever QAFLW Reserve Grade team.
